Strech Your Grocery Savings

Grocery Coupons Tips: January 2012
Keywords: use coupons, buy in bulk, save money, grocery coupons, save on meals, healthy snacks

Here are some tips to stretch your grocery savings:

THINK AHEAD:
2-3 dinners for the week and save the leftovers the other nights.  Create meals on what needs to be used up in the refrigerator.

WRITE A LIST:
Only purchase items you’ll need for the recipes you make from #1 Plan a Menu

SHOP WITH A LIST:
Once you’re at the grocery store, DO NOT stray from your list.

USE COUPONS:
Never hesitate to use coupons… but ONLY for the items on your list!  Don’t buy things only because you have a coupon.

BUY IN BULK: Buy large quantities of your favorite/frequently used items when they’re on sale.  Clear out space in your cupboards, pantry and basement to store extra items.

SAVE FOR LATER: Buy large amounts of items in-season produce, then go home and preserve it.  This is extremely important because this tip goes hand in hand with so many of the other tips.  You can freeze, can, dry, smoke, cure, etc.  The most common methods are freezing and canning.

CHECK THE “PRICE PER UNIT”:
Despite popular belief, sometimes at grocery stores, it’s actually cheaper per unit to buy 2 smaller items than it is to buy one larger portion.

PACK YOUR OWN BREAKFASTS AND LUNCHES: Do this every day so you’re not tempted to buy those “on the run” meals.  Make this part of your nightly routinso it becomes habit.

PACK HEALTHY SNACKS: Pack these in small containers early in the week.  Keep some in your car, purse, office, etc.  This will keep you from buying unhealthy and expensive snacks from vending machines, gas stations, or other convenient places.

BAKE MORE:
Set aside some time each month to bake bread and healthy cookies, then freeze them for consumption throughout the month.  The ingredients needed to bake cost much less and will go much further than buying pre-packaged cookies and breads.

SKIP THE LETTUCE:
Combine delicious, fresh, snack-able fruits into a Tupperware as a “salad”.  This is a great way to keep family members from buying and eating unhealthy or expensive snack foods.

EAT MORE NUTS:
Another great snack food, this is a cheap, yet healthy, alternative to expensive snack foods.

ORGANIZE YOUR FOOD PANTRY:
This is VERY important because most people waste lots of food and money because it simply gets lost in the black hole that is their pantry!
